Rules vary from state to state on how sales taxes are paid and collected. As a general rule, you collect sales tax for items shipped to an address that is in the same state as your business. States have unique requirements and rules for registering your business and obtaining a state sales tax id number. Most wholesale suppliers will require you to provide them with your tax id. This allows the supplier to sell items to you tax free and puts the burden of sales tax collection onto you.
